Derek Irvine, 50, a dedicated veteran of Fremont County law enforcement with a distinguished 29-year career, announced his candidacy for Fremont County Sheriff. Irvine, running as a Republican, has a strong commitment to public safety, community engagement, and the protection of constitutional rights. He brings a wealth of experience and a clear vision for the future of law enforcement in the county.
Derek and his wife, Jennifer, both grew up in Fremont County. They are parents of two children, and have been active members of the Fremont County community. Irvine graduated from Canon City High School in 1993. His career in law enforcement began in 1995 when he graduated from the Pueblo Community College Law Enforcement Academy. In 1996, he joined the Fremont County Sheriff’s Department as a Deputy in the Jail division. His dedication and professionalism led to several promotions within the department, including Transport Deputy, Patrol Deputy, and Sergeant in the Sheriff’s Patrol Division.
In 2002, Irvine joined the Canon City Police Department. During his 16-year tenure, he served the community as a Patrol Officer, Detective, Detective Sergeant, and Patrol Sergeant. Irvine’s time as a Detective Sergeant equipped him with valuable experience in tackling complex investigations. Through collaborative efforts, Irvine played a vital role in protecting Fremont County’s most vulnerable citizens.
In January of 2019, Irvine returned to the Fremont County Sheriff's Office as Sheriff Allen Cooper's Undersheriff. He also completed his bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from Central Christian University of Kansas and his master's degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. Irvine has been integral in advancing the professionalism of the sheriff's office, increasing coverage in the rural areas of Fremont County, and modernizing the office.
“Throughout my career, I’ve remained devoted to serving the citizens of Fremont County,” Irvine said. “Now, I’m excited to take this commitment to the next level by running for Fremont County Sheriff. I aim to continue to build a professional, effective, and accountable law enforcement organization that ensures the safety and well-being of all residents and visitors.”
Irvine says he has a proven track record of dedication to public safety, and his platform reflects his experience and expertise. He aims to enhance the county’s safety, strengthen community bonds, and ensure justice and fairness for all residents.
“Our community is the heart of our work, and strong partnerships are essential. I am committed to working closely with groups, organizations, and individual citizens to foster collaboration that drives us towards our mutual goals,” Irvine stated.
He believes his comprehensive platform, years of service within Fremont County, and well-rounded training will allow him to stand out in the race.
“It’s time to shape a future where our law enforcement agency stands as a beacon of professionalism, our constitutional rights are safeguarded, our communities are served with excellence,” Irvine said.
